my head is swimming
yes, i'ts been a long time since I've last posted. my computer was dying... but I have a new one! and it snowed on the beach today! I woke up before dawn and dragged claire out to the spit to see the snow on the dunes.

sometimes dealing with roadkill I have a hard time dealing with feelings of disgust and frustration - rotting flesh can be disgusting, and if you want to preserve what you can of it, it's very difficult to keep from spreading the filth all over everything. last night I took care of a coyote that had suffered a blow to the chest that burst the capillaries in her lungs. out in the cold and without horrendous internal trauma, she was preserved as if still close to life. I had no sense of squeamishness about her flesh that I often have with roadkills. as I finished pulling the skin from her face, I was struck by the way the blood looked so much like tears. I am grateful to her for giving me her flesh to eat, for giving me her beautiful coat to wear, but most of all for showing me that bringing the dead back to life can be satisfying and beautiful .

this one is from back in june, dad, kiliii, patrick and I went paddling on barney reservoir, which was at it's highest level I've ever seen it. we made it all the way back up into the swamp at the head of it. really pretty...

these things stand out from the landscape in an incredible way - fuzzy, bright white, with bright magenta flowers.

a couple of now-late photos from megan and ana's visit. I'm falling way behind on processing, I'm also running out of disk space. I'm working on it.

this is the southernmost edge of the hell's half complex, which is a 5 mile ride up the road (and river valley) from the house. I hear rumors that they have the southern edge mostly contained and calmed down now, and they're working primarily on the north half now.

this is actually the second harvesting round on these blackcaps, I hit them once already. almost a gallon total harvest between this and another patch... maybe 3 or 4 hours picking time. only catch is that I had to literally wade through poison oak to get to some of them. I paid with a bit of a rash on my legs where my pants rode up, but it wasn't too bad. worth it!

this is the river, facing downstream (north west). this is a short walk across the valley/floodplain from the house.

I love the color of these wasps. I swear I didn't crank the color on this photo at all.
props to the color rendition from the K-10 for capturing it too.

the photo isn't the best, but the rhubarb-apple-pear pie was.
with honey and coconut milk. and yes, pie crust thrown together in five minutes might be a little crunchier but it's still damn good.

I am grappling with the fact that a large portion of my photography has been of people, which is something I don't see a lot of these days. so I've turned to occasionally attempting to photograph myself as a last resort.
I what you can't really see here is that I just went swimming and I'm also watching the sunset while I play. the solo time has been good for me so far...

if you look close, there's a quail chick in this photo. it seems like there might be up to a dozen or so in the little group, they're very cute, running around and peeping at each other. amazingly well camoflaged, and surprisingly fast and agile. I had a hard time getting even this.

there's a family of quail living in and around the back yard, you can hear them peeping away all day long. very cute.

caught these ants trying to stuff a large, very green beetle - still alive - into a very small crack. I need a better macro lens, the tight crop on this leaves much detail sharpness to be desired... still, I tried the optio and this shot with the SLR was better than what I got with the optio.

you know what I mean.
found this old jacket in a pile of bins scraps, an outfit and prop were quickly assembled, and a 5-minute fashion shoot ensued. you don't want to see the rest.

I finally downloaded the photos off my old OPTIO. here's a couple shots from last summer of an attempt at sailing a catamaran of two kayaks lashed together.
it needed a keel of some kind. also, more wind would have helped. I will try again someday.

shaun flattens yet another strip of the final layer of our new earthen floor. I can see why we use concrete these days... this is a hell of a lot of work. we should have kept a log of people's volunteer hours for this project, it's taken more than I expected.
